We Lead on Rural Climate Action

What are Nature-Based Climate Solutions?

Rural Climate Action means regenerative agriculture, conservation, and watershed restoration: Western Colorado can be a global leader!

Nature-based Solutions are land-management practices that mimic and restore natural systems to improve habitats and watersheds, strengthen ecosystem health, and boost climate resiliency and carbon uptake.

Rural Colorado is square in the crosshairs of the climate crisis. But more importantly we have tremendous opportunities to be climate leaders - and Nature-Based Solutions are key!

Two ways that Colorado Farm & Food Alliance works for these solutions in the region are agriculture and land-use. Now we need your help.

What you can do:

  1. Make a donation and share with your friends and family so they can make one too

  2. Create virtual fundraiser to share on your own social media feeds

  3. Host a House or Garden Party, or a fundraiser at your pub or business

If you want to learn more about hosting a small gathering of your friends and colleagues, or for your patrons or the community please reach us at the link above or via our contact page.

Nature-Based Solutions are Key to Rural Climate Action

Western Colorado, like many places in rural America, is well-positioned to lead the way on centering land-use and agriculture in the global effort to solve one of the greatest challenges of our time: the climate emergency.

Two of the ways the Colorado Farm & Food Alliance is doing that are through helping to shift agricultural practices and by boosting regional efforts at land and watershed conservation and restoration.

Shifting agricultural practices: Certain agricultural practices can provide important “ecosystem services” that help protect water quality and supplies, boost beneficial animal life including pollinators, and can help manage carbon by storing it out of the atmosphere.

What we do:

  • Educate about regenerative and other methods to support shift in agriculture practices

  • Elevate farmers, ranchers and local experts as program mentors and leaders

  • Create pathways to expand best practices in and around the Gunnison region to benefit farmers, communities and the environment.

Land and watershed conservation and restoration: Enhancing, protecting, and restoring lands and watersheds, from backyards and rural properties to river corridors and public lands

What we do:

  • Educate about the use of nature-based solutions in promoting landscape- and watershed-scale restoration and ecosystem resiliency.

  • Center community leaders in regional efforts to conserve important water supply areas and wildlife habitat on National Forests, public lands, and in partnership with landowners

  • Work together with partner organizations, landowners, and land managers to help develop projects and opportunities to improve ecosystem services on regional lands
