Climate Action & Healthy Watersheds

Climate Action and Healthy Watersheds Protects our Farms, Food and Drink.

The Colorado Farm & Food Alliance seeks to protect our farms, food, and drink by defending the health of our lands and our reliable supply of clean water. We work to cultivate leaders from community groups and local food networks to provide opportunities to learn, to consider and partner on solutions and to engage with policymakers and elected officials from the local and state to the federal levels.

Our advocacy supports sustainable rural communities and food systems, and promotes strategic action on key climate and conservation policy.

The need for clean water and healthy land is vital to Colorado and to our quality food and drink. Farmers and ranchers rely on a stable climate, and their livelihoods are especially vulnerable to extreme weather – from droughts to floods. Our chefs, markets, and drink producers all rely on supplies of clean water and the top-quality ingredients our farmers and ranchers provide. Colorado’s award-winning wines and craft beers, as well as our agriculture, all depend on clean water. But the climate emergency puts our farms and food systems at risk like never before. And heavy industrial activities like oil and gas development can put our water supplies in jeopardy, by diverting water from agriculture to fracking and other oilfield use, and through spills and pollution. Oil and gas development helps drive climate change, degrades our air quality, and can also harm the health of the land and soils upon which farming depends.

Western Slope Crisis vs. Rural Climate Action

The Gunnison River Basin is at ground zero when it comes to the global climate emergency. And our region is also at the epicenter of rural climate action. But the moment is urgent.

Healthy Lands & Watersheds

Protecting the health of our public lands and watersheds is core to the work of the Colorado Farm & Food Alliance since our earliest days.

We support local efforts to secure enduring protections for area public lands and projects to rehabilitate riparian and other key lands.
